Commemorating the Past &
Preparing for the Future

At the George Washington University, international affairs has been part of our curriculum for 125 years. Always with a focus on excellence, we have prepared students to shape the future of diplomacy, global governance, and international affairs, defined broadly, for over a century.

“In 1898, Columbian University of the District of Columbia established the School of Comparative Jurisprudence and Diplomacy, our school’s institutional predecessor. U.S. President William McKinley and members of his Cabinet attended the opening ceremony on November 15 of that year, and the Washington Post characterized its founding as 'the first school of its kind established in the country. The want of it is recognized by every one who has given the subject consideration.'"
